Sia’s seventh album, “This Is Acting” is created with the intent she wrote “for other people” she told nme during her interview. Throughout her extensive career, Sia has written for artists like Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce and Rhianna just to name a few. This album stems from that, speaking on behalf of others saying, “…I didn’t go in thinking this is something I would say. It’s more like play acting.”
In doing so, Sia has created an album that resonates with many. An unusual direction for Sia, however very pop friendly. I imagine it doing well across the board among the different genres of music and appeasing her fans worldwide.
The very representation of Sia is exhibited in her opening song, “Bird Set Free”
I don’t care if i sing off key, I found myself in my melodies. I sing for love, I sing for me. I shout it out like a bird set free. No, I don’t care if i sing off key, I found myself in my melodies. I sing for love, I sing for me. I shout it out like a bird set free. I shout it out like a bird set free. I shout it out like a bird set free.
If you knew anything about the artist, you would know that Sia creates the rhythm to which she marches to. A strong anthem, a preface that successfully sets the tone for the unique experience her audience will immerse themselves in to.
Be warned that once you settle into what you think will be the universal sound of this album, you are jolted with a track like “Move Your Body” that the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer could have easily swayed to and won a Grammy nomination for. Or the track intended for Rhiana in “Reaper” with a bouncy element and catchy chorus that will have you swaying and can easily be your “roll-down-the-windows-and-sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs-like-you-are-carefree.”
And then there’s the very dance-able beats in “Sweet Design” only to realize on closer inspection that the entire song has “thong” repeated like a broken record.
Sia reminds the listener of just the kind of artist she is, one that is fearless and is always ever changing. Giving them a taste of the brilliant musician she is; one who is able to seamlessly transition intricately between genres of music. The ultimate composer, producer, writer and now perfectly executed performer.
If for no other reason than to know that this body of Sia’s work could have well been the next number one hit on some of your favorite artists and their newly released albums this year, is enough to purchase your copy here on January 29th.
